On December 2, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that would make a rail strike illegal. The bill was part of a tentative agreement that was reached between the unions and railroad officials in September.
A strike by rail workers would have created a domino effect on the slowly recovering supply chain, affecting not just rail shipments but other transportation modes which are more commonly used by our industry. It also would have had a devasting effect on the overall US economy.
As such, the VMA and 400+ other groups cosigned a coalition letter last month to Congressional leadership urging them to take immediate action on this important issue. It appears as if the message was heard.
